Abstract

This paper reports a bibliometric approach for mapping the literature on harnessing the Digital Twinning concepts, models, and applications in mechanical fatigue of materials and structures. It seeks to determine how this topic has grown over time, who has contributed most to the progress of research, and which are the actual network connections among the researchers in this rapidly emerging branch of structural mechanics. Besides, a frequency-based co-occurrence study was carried out to identify the most relevant authors' keywords of scientific publications appertaining to the use of Digital Twins in mechanical fatigue, out of which several were selected as control terms and utilized to create a conceptual thematic map that allows for visualizing the trends of major research topics. The findings accentuate the wide-ranging and interdisciplinary effects throughout various engineering domains by revealing three interconnected themes, i.e., Digital Twinning for uncertainty quantification and optimization, Finite Element Analysis for fatigue life-based design and simulation, as well as Structural Health Monitoring to detect the damages in materials and structures.
