Brasov City, the capital of Brasov region, with a population of almost 300,000 inhabitants, was first mentioned in documents back in 1235 (with the name Corona), as a medieval fortress built over a former neolithic settlement. It is located in central region of Romania, about 166 km from Bucharest. It is surrounded by the Southern Carpathians, and is part of the Transylvania region. It takes almost 3 hours drive from Bucharest International Airport to Brasov. Intercity trains and European roads are connecting Brasov to the major cities in Romania and Europe. Brasov gives you the opportunity to visit old historical monuments and museums that reflect the cultural as well as historical importance of the place. Brasov is an old medieval city. The buildings of Brasov reflect the evolution of the city throughout ages. Also known as Kronstadt or Corona, Brasov was the home of some of the best craftsmen, jewelers, and traders living in Transylvania. The city of Brasov boasts of a rich historic heritage. Surrounded on three sides by mountains, it was a perfect place for a medieval settlement. The old city, founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211, is one of the best preserved. |
Higher Education in Brasov University level education came to be and evolved through the city of Brașov's strong cultural tradition and climate. The first higher education school in Brașov was founded in 1940 in the form of the 'Academy of Commercial and Industrial Studies', followed by the 'Institute of Forestry' and the 'Institute of Mechanics' in 1948 and 49 respectively. Following 1953, these merge into the 'Polytechnic Institute of Brașov', while 1960 sees the establishment of another institute, with departments of Mathematics, Physics and Biology, followed by the founding of a department of Music in 1969. In 1971 the 'University of Brașov' is founded by the merger of all higher education institutes. Following the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the university changed its name to that of today, the '"Transilvania" University of Brașov'. |

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering | Starting with the academic year 2005-2006, courses are organized to correspond with the Bologna Process. In 2008 Transylvania University celebrated 60 years since the establishment of the first structures of higher education in Brasov, years of continuous development, which have enabled the university to state that the reference entity Romanian academic space. |
